FORD ANNOUNCES 1.0-LITRE ECOBOOST ENGINE

Ford has announced that it’s developing a 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, the smallest engine to ever come out with a Blue Oval. The 3-cylinder petrol motor with a turbocharger was designed at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the United Kingdom. At the same time the company announced its first 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Though no figures were revealed, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost is said to be more powerful than most 4-cylinder 1.6-litre engines out there, meaning at least 80kW by today’s standards. At the same time, Ford says it will save motorists litres in fuel, thanks to technologies such as turbocharging, direct fuel injection and something called variable camshaft timing or Ti-VCT.

Cars to be fitted with the new engine have not been announced, but we can guess that lower-end units like the Fiesta, Bantam and even Focus are the target.
